The Head of the Schuylkill anchors the Philadelphia Classic Regatta SeriesThe Head of the Schuylkill Regatta is the anchor regatta in the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, which features 20 major rowing events on one historic river.
The year-long series of rowing events is the only one of its kind in any major U.S. city, making Philadelphia truly the center of rowing, and highlighting the fact that the Schuylkill River is host to more regattas annually than any other river in the nation. The regatta schedule runs from March through late October, ending with the Head of the Schuylkill on the last weekend, and features more than 35,000 competitors in over 7,700 boats representing all rowing categories: high schools, colleges, open, clubs, masters, adaptive and recreational.
The Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series is organized by the Schuylkill Navy, which is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the country, representing the 12 rowing clubs based on Philadelphia's iconic Boathouse Row.
The series is built upon a tradition that launched the first organized regatta on The Schuylkill River in 1835...a full eight years before the start of the rowing program at Harvard.
As crews fine tune race plans for their current sprint season, regatta organizers are already in full swing to ensure exceptional fall head racing at Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on October 27 and 28, 2012. The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta's volunteer Board of Directors recently announced the election of four new members and its slate of 2011 officers:
